Revising

Yeah so today my teacher called me out on the fact that I drink soy-milk. The conversation started when a kid announced that Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream had once been asked to make a product with human breast milk. The statement suggested that cow's milk is not meant for human digestion (and it's not) and that human breast milk would be a natural replacement. I simply suggested "Why not just make it with soy-milk?" I was then mocked and criticized for even bringing that up, but the only reason I did so was to counter-argue a better way of replacing cow's milk with something other than human breast milk. So one thing led to another and then I opened up my mouth too soon and said that I was vegan. However, I've only been 100% for a little over a week now... but I've been drinking soy-milk instead of cow's milk since I became a vegetarian a year ago. I hate talking about this, but I wanted to clear some things up. I think it's a personal choice of how someone chooses to treat his or her own body, and I just prefer being this way. I feel good all the time. I have not caught a cold or been sick in over a year, and I'm never tired. Also there is the environmental approach, where the meat industry is the number one cause of green house gas emissions in the U.S. Then there is the world hunger approach which states that if  Americans limited their meat intake by 10%, 60,000,000 hungry people could be kept alive each year just from the over excessive energy put into fattening up livestock. Lastly, there is a buddhist side which is all about the overall kindness to everything and everyone on the planet. That's all I have to say.

I have always had a problem with the name soy milk, because technically when one thinks on it..."soy milk" should actually be soy juice. That aside I agree soy milk is a good alternative to cow's milk and at one point I myself took up "soy milk" versus cow's milk. If people do some research on it they would find it actually is statistically sweeter than traditional milk, not to mention healthier. Being the cook I am however, I would find it frustrating to give up meat, just because of the recipes it would keep me from making. I can see where you are coming from with it all, and you make some good points, but all in all I think lean poultry can be beneficial, while I agree beef is somewhat too heavy, plus the smoke taste is not quite my style. That being said, best of luck in your endeavors and hopefully things stay as easy for you as they are at the moment.

Well, I guess that's what you get for having personal convictions outside of the norm. I have to justify my entire belief system to a different person everyday as you will most likely have to as well. It's worth it if it's what you really believe in, though. All I have to say is: Let the marginalization commence.

I have some weird obsession of wanting to know all the secretive vegans & vegetarians out there. They amaze me, because I absolutly give all of you credit. I don't even love meat, I mean I DO eat it every night in some form, but it's not my favorite. What I mean is it's not anything I would really miss, but the actual effort it would take for me to be vegetarian or vegan is too much for me to handle. I think the lifestyle is better accepted now adays (even BK has a veggie burger now... uhhh) but it doesn't mean that its any easier when there is about 20 to 1 ratio of meat products as opposed to vegetarian products offered. SO although you may feel critizised I really admire your ability to make that choice, even more inspired when you have a better reason than "Cause I felt like it". You have a meaning behind it and I think that's really cool.

I have to commend you, too on your commitment to doing something that is so important to you. I frankly have to agree with you and say that there is no good reason for you to be called out because of the fact that you have taken a more alternative approach to how you live your life. I am a firm believer in people just letting other people live their lives (doing what they want to do how they want to do it) and not interfering with them. Most people who are ostracized for the decisions they make about their lives are in no way hurting or even bothering the people around them. So I say why harass them if they didn't do anything wrong to you. Good luck with your new veganism (i don't know if that is a word), you are doing something a lot of other people (including myself) wouldn't be able to do.

Let's say it together, everyone: HYPERSENSITIVE. Put whatever you want in your body. But soy makes me ill.

And: can you please explain this: "cow's milk is not meant for human digestion (and it's not)"?

Alright first of all, this blog was a joke. I didn't expect people to take it literally. But, think about it. Cow's milk. Cows make it for their young. Not for us. It has a lot of unnecessary things in it. I just think that soy milk tastes better, that's why I started drinking it in the first place. It came with many benefits.

Secondly, I agree with you jj. This is too much drama. I just want everyone to know that I don't really take much, if anything, in life too seriously. I wasn't offended after class. I just thought this would be a sweet blog post and a good reason to procrastinate on my homework.

I had not intention of being dramatic. I just know from experience that vegans are frequently marginalized. It's a pretty tough concept for some people to get, and most people usually think you're crazy for doing it. Just my observation, I suppose. I only wrote my first comment like that because I thought it was fun(and it was). Over-dramatized statements are really amusing to write. They make things seem more epic than they actually are.

All I can say is we all love a little drama...
it's fun to drag it on..
plus we all know we all just like to get our opinion in somewhere.. even if it is just a make beleive debate.
what's wrong with the genre of fantasy?

Yo, its tough out their to find out what is really healthy. Both the milk and the soy industries are companies. And us such they fund studies that find adverse health effects in their competitors products. I drink soy milk. The decider for me was that milk came from a cow teet on a highly polluting cow farm, and was full of enough fat and nutrition for the growth of a cow. For some this may not be compelling, these people drink milk
