Just a thought...

All of this poetry has brought me back to thinking deeper about everything around me. Our Harry Potter discussion yesterday led into these different views of different novels and how they are differently interpreted in foreign places, as well as the criticism that they execute on one another. The other night I just happened to be thinking about what everyone's purpose is, what the government's purpose is, communities - small and large. Why do people mind each other's business? When we drive in cars we are separated from those around us, although they, too, are there. Yet, we have to put titles on ourselves and argue about whether or not abortion should be legal, whether or not gays should be allowed to marry, and whether or not certain drugs are should actually be banned, or if they should be accepted as harmless natural herbs. Why criticize all of these things if they are not specifically pertained to every human? Isn't life about living in the moment? When living in the moment, what is contained in the moment is the only thing that matters. If you cannot remain inside of this present notion, then what is the purpose of this world?

YAY FOR POSTING!! You're thought about living in the present notion is quite intriguing (especially since we as a society don't anymore).

I don't quite agree. I don't think that arguing for things you believe in is pointless at all. I think that it's vital to utilize the present to create a better future. After all, the future will soon be the present, and what's the use of living in the moment if the present happens to SUCK? Taking the time to make attempts to impact the world in ways that you believe will be positive is a fulfilling way to spend the present.
Granted, in the grand scheme of things our lives are but infinitesimal stains on the fabric of existence, but for right now we DO exist ( in a society that I agree is far more complex than it should be) and we should use our existence to actually DO something. Relaxing and star-gazing can be equally valuable, but living in the moment isn't neccessarily what life is about.
In the simplest terms, life is about survival, and one can't even SURVIVE using only that notion. Life, unfortunately requires planning ahead. For example, ieven in an Ice Age society, one would still have to plan ahead to store food and gather firewood for the upcoming storms. In contemporary times the same general principles apply but with different material objects. Beliefs can be substituted as well. One can push for better moral standings for themselves or others in hopes that the future will be more peaceful.
Humanity is not based on living in the present and never has been, therefore, it cannot be what life is all about. It is my belief that life encompasses the past, present, and future. Sure, it's ok to live in the present. It's good to do it once in a while. Kick back, relax, enjoy life... but it's unrealistic to suggest that people do it all the time. There would be no progress.

Ah Maria I didn't mean it like that. Voicing your opinion is good, but the fact that some people get in other people's business just so that they can feel better about themselves and maybe even make more money.
